3 Mic Tips for Women

People always ask me for tips about wearing their mic onstage, so I’m going to tell you ladies the three main things you need to know.

(If you’re a man, you’ll still find value here, but if you know any women who speak onstage, please forward this to them, okay? My gift.)

Here are those three tips:

1. Let your earrings dangle.
As I show you on the video, if you want to wear earrings onstage, they need to fall below the mic, otherwise they’re going bang against it and mar your sound. If you’re wearing the wrong type of earrings, you’ll just end up having to take them off. Now, if you do have to sacrifice your earrings for good sound, do it. Don’t argue with your A/V crew. Good sound is more important.

2. Over both ears.
If you have a choice of headset, ask for the type that goes over both ears, rather than just one. The headset I demonstrate in the video is called a double over ear by Countryman. We women have earrings, we may have long hair, we’re flipping our hair, so we need a mic that’s going to stay put. This type is also great for men with beards.

3. Get personal.
The last thing you want is sound problems onstage. So there’s just no way around it, you’re going to have to get personal with your A/V team. If they’re placing the boxy bodypack onto the back of your bra, make sure that it’s sitting between your bra and your skin, with the clip facing outward, and the antenna showing. Tucked like that, between your bra and your back, it’s very secure. A lot of people will place it between their bra and their clothing, and it just bounces around, causing problems. You don’t want that. You want to feel comfortable and secure when making your Signature Talk™.
